Outdoor Cycling Class (2013)


One of the biggest attractions to outdoor
cycling is the feeling of freedom. Remember when you were a kid on a bike with the wind
at your back and how free you felt? Well combine that with getting fitter and being outside.
You get the sense of adventure every time you come to class. It’s a wonderful workout,
you’re not stuck in a gym, the scenery’s always changing. We have so many beautiful beaches
and the bay and mountains and we get to see these places. Last week when we rode this
ride we got down to the Windansea beach and watched the surfers. In the class we focus on fitness first, getting more cardio vascular fitness, muscular strength and endurance,
body composition. We also focus on the skills of riding a bike: road safety, how to deal
with traffic, getting more speed and efficiency with the spin or the cadence of the bike,
how fast you pedal. We also learn about riding in groups, being in pace lines, drafting.
We build progressively, slowly adding mileage and you don’t have to be locked into a gym
doing repetitive exercises that may be tedious or boring. You’re going to be outside seeing
things and exploring. You’re gonna have a big social element to the class because people
are talking and sharing. And they don’t have to worry about being left behind because the
rides always incorporate short and long loops. Also building on our skill level, some beginners
are not comfortable riding around people or riding in traffic. So we gradually acclimate
them to these situations. I recommend that they have a bike that’s in good working order.
Any kind of bike will work. It is a road biking class and road bikes are faster, but if you
have a mountain bike or hybrid city bike that will work fine. You need a helmet, that’s
absolutely mandatory.
