Riding the Knolls – Mud Flats – Ski-Doo Snowmobile Reviews – Bears Ears Monument

CHAD: WHERE CAN YOU FIND ICE, AND SAND, SIDE-BY-SIDE IN THE BARREN WASTELAND? WELL WE’RE FINDING OUT TODAY ON
A DESERT AT YOUR LEISURE
ADVENTURE. I’M CHAD BOOTH RIA AND I ARE
HITTING THE DUNES KISSED WITH
FROST WELL ZACH CIPRIANO IS ICE SKATING
WITH AN ATV. MALIA STRINGHAM
TRIES TO CUT THROUGH THE MISCONCEPTIONS AND
CONFUSIONS OF THE BEARS YEARS
NATIONAL MONUMENT REDUCTION AND WHAT IT COULD MEAN FOR
RECREATIONISTS AND EXPLORERS OWN
THE OUTDOORS RIGHT NOW WITH AT YOUR LEISURE. (Theme Music up) CHAD: WELL, WHEN YOU HAVE FROST
ON THE HARVEST IT’S NOT SO GOOD
BUT WHEN YOU HAVE FROST ON THE SAND IT’S A
GREAT THING. I EVERYBODY HOW ARE
YOU DOING TODAY? WELCOME TO AT YOUR LEISURE I’M
CHAD BOOTH. RIA: AND I’M RIA ROSSI BOOTH,
AND THAT YOUR LEISURE IS OUT
HERE IN KNOLLS AND THIS IS A REALLY COOL SPOT TO
RECREATE WERE IN BETWEEN SALT
LAKE AND WENDOVER. AND YOU TALK ABOUT WIDE OPEN
SPACES, ALL MY GOSH THIS IS JUST
HEAVEN OUT HERE. CHAD: AND WE’RE OUT HERE IN THE
MIDDLE OF THE WINTER WHO NEEDS
SNOW WHEN YOU HAVE THE MAGIC OF THIS FROST
THAT COATS THE LANDSCAPE AND
TURNS IT KIND OF A PEARL WHITE. IT’S JUST REALLY
COOL YOU CAN JUST STOP ANYWHERE
AND STARE AT THE FROST IT’S MARVELOUS. RIA: IT’S BEAUTIFUL AND GUESS
WHAT? NO GOGGLES. BECAUSE
THERE’S NO DUST. CHAD: THAT’S TRUE, THIS TIME A
YEAR THERE’S VERY LITTLE DUST
BECAUSE OF THE FROST SO IT’S A GREAT WAY TO
COME OUT AND DO A WINTER RIDE
WHEN YOU WANT TO JUST LIKE GET YOUR ATV DIRTY.
AND THERE’S A TON OF TERRAIN OUT
HERE. WERE GOING TO SHOW YOU A LOT OF
THAT TERRAIN AND WERE GOING TO
LEARN A LITTLE BIT MORE ABOUT THE AREA RIGHT
NOW. HEIDI: WHEN YOU GO OUT TO THE
KNOLLS THERE’S JUST A LITTLE BIT
OF EVERYTHING CUSS THERE’S THE SANDY SALT
FLATS THAT YOU CAN JUST GO AS
FAST AS YOU WANT TO GO AND THEN YOU HAVE AN AREA
THAT’S JUST MOUNTAINOUS. AMY: I DON’T REALLY KNOW HOW TO
DESCRIBE IT BUT I FEEL LIKE IT’S
MARS OR SOMETHING. VERY OPEN THE GROUND IS REALLY
KIND OF WEIRD TO DRIVE ON LIKE
IT’S SAND OR CLAY OR I DON’T KNOW IT’S JUST A
DIFFERENT FEEL OUT THERE. HEIDI: WE TAKE MOTORCYCLES AND
RAZORS AND THEN JUMP ON A DIRT
BIKE AND GO IN A DIFFERENT DIRECTION AND PLAY IN
LIKE A LITTLE BIT MORE
MOUNTAINOUS AREA, A LITTLE BIT MORE ROCKY AREA AND
YOU LEARN A LOT, THAT’S WHAT I
LOVE ABOUT KNOLLS AND ALSO DELL. IT HAS YOUR
SAGEBRUSH, IT HAS FLATS, IT HAS
LITTLE MOUNTAINOUS AREA SO, BY THE TIME YOU’RE DONE
WITH THE DAY THEY FEEL REALLY
CONFIDENT THAT THERE ISN’T ANYTHING THAT THEY
CAN DO. AMY: IT UNITES US. MY DAUGHTER
RACES BAJA AND LOVES TO DRIVE
THE RZR WHILE MY BOYS RIDE DIRT BIKES. IT’S FUN FOR
ALL OF US. HEIDI: AND IF THEY LEARN OUT
HERE TO PICK THEMSELVES UP THEN
THEY’LL BE ABLE TO DO IT IN ALL ASPECTS OF THEIR
LIFE. THEY’LL LEARN HERE IN THE
OUTDOORS AND BE READY FOR OTHER THINGS IN LIFE.
THAT’S THE REASON I LOVE IT. CHAD: THERE IS A DICHOTOMY IN
THE WINTERTIME OUT HERE, IT’S
LIKE TO PARALLEL UNIVERSES. IT’S LIKE A STAR TREK
EPISODE OR SOMETHING. RIA: YEAH. CHAD: BECAUSE LOOK AT THIS.
YOU’VE GOT SAND ON ONE SIDE AND
YOU’VE GOT FROST ON THE OTHER. RIA: LOOK HOW COOL THAT IS. CHAD: ISN’T THAT SOMETHING. RIA: THAT’S SO COOL. CHAD: TAKE A LOOK AT THIS,
YOU’VE GOT ALMOST A HALF INCH OF
THESE LITTLE FROST CRYSTALS GROWING ON THE SAND. RIA: I WONDER IF YOU COULD EAT
THAT? CHAD: WELL RIA: HERE. HA HA. CHAD: OH, YOU WANT ME TO EAT IT?
NOT HER. RIA: THAT IS REALLY, IT’S SO
BEAUTIFUL. CHAD: IT’S VERY FASCINATING, SO,
WITH ALL THIS VARIETY OUT HERE
THERE IS STILL AN AREA THAT WE HAVEN’T COVERED
YET. AND IT’S AN AREA MOST
PEOPLE DON’T KNOW ABOUT FOR RIDING IT’S JUST TO
THE EAST OF HERE IT’S CALLED MUD
FLATS AND IF YOU LISTEN VERY CLOSELY YOU CAN HEAR
THE MOTOR REVVEING AND ZACH
CIPRIANO OUT THERE READY TO TELL YOU ALL ABOUT IT. ZACH: THANKS CHAD. YOU KNOW WHEN
YOU THINK ABOUT WRITING IN THE
MIDDLE OF THE DESERT YOU DON’T TYPICALLY THINK
ABOUT LARGE QUANTITIES OF WATER.
BUT THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT YOU’RE GOING TO
FIND OUT HERE AT THE MUD FLATS. Music up ZACH: FOR THOUSANDS OF YEARS THE
DENSE CLAY OF THE SALT FLATS HAS
FORCED WATER TO ACCUMULATE ON THE SURFACE.
UNABLE TO SOAK INTO THE GROUND.
VAST POOLS ARE LEFT BEHIND CREATING A SLOPPING WORLD
OF STICKY MUD AND PONDS THAT
TURN ANY RIDING EXCURSION INTO A VERY UNIQUE
EXPERIENCE. THIS TIME OF YEAR
HOWEVER, THE TEMPERATURES RARELY GET
ABOVE FREEZING. WHICH MEANS,
EVEN THE HIGH SALT CONTENT OF THE WATER CAN’T KEEP IT FROM
TURNING INTO SLABS OF ICE. SO IF YOU’VE EVER WANTED TO
FIGURE SKATE WITH YOUR
SIDE-BY-SIDE, THIS IS THE ENVIRONMENT FOR YOU. David Steadman: it was kind of
cool because we went, we tried
to stay out of the mud but when we realized
that it was frozen we kind of
played on the ice until we fell through, it was
kind of cool actually. Brandon Steadman: all I think it
was awesome I’ve never actually
had quite that opportunity to do that. So I
came out here during the winter
and usually I’m on the dirt bike and we stay over
here in the sand, but that was a
cool experience because I was expecting a splash
but we go through it and just a
big old ice puddle until we went through it
a few times and started breaking
through. It would kind of feel like
hydroplaning or driving in the
snow really is what it felt like. So the first time it
was kind of un-easy but after
that I was able to let go and just have fun with
it. But it was really fun and
kind of a new writing experience that I got to endure
today. David Steadman: kind of nice to
get out as a dirt biker
especially some traction is nice and when it’s real Sandy
over here you get over there and
get a little bit of moisture in the dirt
around them ponds you can lay it
over and have some good traction, it’s a lot of fun
out there. ZACH: DAVID STEADMAN AND HIS SON
BRANDON HAVE BEEN EXPLORING THE
LANDS ALONG I 84 DECADES THEY’VE HIT LONELY
MOUNTAINTOPS AND FLATS THAT
DISAPPEAR PAST THE HORIZON. BUT THE CONDITIONS TODAY ARE
SOMETHING EVEN THESE TWO
EXPERIENCED TRAVELERS HAVE NEVER SEEN. THE GROUND HAS
THAWED ENOUGH TO SOFTEN, BUT THE
WATER IS STILL FROZEN SOLID. SO YOU HAVE AN
INTERESTING MIXTURE OF MUD AND
ICE. MOST OF THE TIME WE AVOID MUD ON THE TRAIL FOR FEAR
OF LEAVING BEHIND RUTS. BUT OUT
HERE, THOSE RUTS ACTUALLY BECOME A DEFINING
FEATURE OF MUD FLATS. FORMING
NATURAL RACETRACKS THAT GIVES SOME ADDITIONAL
TEXTURE TO THE FEATURELESS
EXPANSE. David Steadman: there’s little
corner tracks all over out here. I found one today that I had no
idea was there as much time as
I’ve been out here, I never knew that. We goofed off
on it for a little bit. Just to
be out here with fresh air and there’s nobody
here today at all we haven’t
even heard another motor so you know it’s just great to
be out in nature the matter
where you’re at. Brandon Steadman: in the summer
you get a time of people out
here. It breaks up the people, you don’t have to
deal with everyone just in one
spot. But, what I like about it is when I come out
with my buddies and friends when
we get sick of the dunes over here, we’ll go
hit the trail lines that way.
And if we get sick of those two will just go
out to the flats and there’s
pretty much every kind of riding you can find out
here, trail riding, sand,
anything really. ZACH: NOW REMEMBER, KNOLLS IS A
FEE AREA SO COME PREPARED. BUT
THERE ARE BATHROOMS THAN PLENTY OF AREAS
TO CAMP. SO DON’T BE AFRAID TO
TAKE A COUPLE OF DAYS TO EXPLORE. YOU WON’T RUN
OUT OF RIDING OPPORTUNITIES. THE
DUNES ARE FUN, THE ROCKY TRAILS ENJOYABLE, BUT
FOR SOMETHING COMPLETELY NEW
YOU’LL NEED TO LOOK EAST ONCE ARRIVING AT
KNOLLS, ESPECIALLY THIS TIME OF
YEAR. THE ICE AND MUD MAKE FOR A MEMORABLE DAY,
AND YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT YOU’LL
DISCOVER WHEN YOU POINT YOUR MACHINE TOWARDS
THE DISTANT HILLS. Brandon Steadman: once your
introduced to the motor world
behind bars. Ha ha. The handlebars, you just cannot
give it up. Once you experience the thrill
you just crave it. David Steadman: I tell my
customers all the time, you have
something like this it gives you an excuse to go out
and do. Wherever, we go out in
any direction from where we live you just go
do it. Get out here and try it. You know, go to the East side a
little bit you know there’s lots
of trails open whatever you want to do.
Flats. It reminds me a lot about
being out in Grantsville where we used to
ride when we are kids you know,
flats and then Sagebrush, flats, Sagebrush,
it’s cool because if it gets too
wet you just stay in the Sagebrush a little
higher. But you always get that
wet dirt traction. Good fun stuff. ZACH: WANT TO TAKE A MOMENT TO
THANK STEDMAN’S FOR TAKING ME
OUT TODAY TO THIS AREA IT’S A GREAT PLACE TO
RIDE WITH LOTS OF OPTIONS. OUT
TO THE WEST YOU’VE GOT THE KNOLLS AND THE
DUNES AND RIGHT HERE ALL OF THE
MUD THAT YOU COULD GO RIGHT IN TO YOUR HEARTS
CONTENT. WELL I’M ZACH CIPRIANO, WERE GOING TO TAKE A QUICK
COMMERCIAL BREAK BUT WHEN WE
COME BACK WERE GOING TO HAVE MORE AT YOUR
LEISURE. (Music up) JORDAN: WELCOME BACK TO AYL. I’M
JORDAN WAYMENT AND TODAY I’M AT
AD TRIPLE S AND I’M GOING TO SHOW YOU THE
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE SKIDOO
SUMMIT X AND THE SKIDOO FREERIDE. RIDERS COME IN ALL SHAPES AND
SIZES SO I’M GOING TO SHOW YOU
THE DIFFERENCES IN THESE TWO MACHINES SO YOU CAN
DECIDE FOR YOURSELF. THE SUMMIT X HAS AN 850 MOTOR
WHICH IS SO POWERFUL. THIS IS
THE SECOND YEAR THEY’VE DONE IT AND I RODE THE
850 LAST YEAR AND COULDN’T
BELIEVE THE POWER. ANOTHER COOL THING IS THE TRACK.
YOU CAN GET IT IN A 16-INCH OR A
15-INCH, AND IT’S COOL BECAUSE IT HAS
T-MOTION, WHICH ALLOWS THE TRACK
TO FLEX WHILE YOU’RE SIDE-HILLING AND GET
AMAZING TRACTION. THE FREERIDE ALSO HAS THE
T-MOTION TRACK, BUT THIS ONE HAS
A LITTLE MORE TUNNEL SUPPORT. ON THE FRONT OF
THE FREERIDE IT HAS STOCK
ADJUSTABLE SHOCKS WHICH IS AWESOME BECAUSE WHEN
YOU’RE JUMPING YOU CAN ADJUST
THEM TO GIVE YOU A SOFTER LANDING OR A HARDER
LANDING DEPENDING ON HOW HIGH
YOU WANT TO GO AND HOW HARD YOU WANT TO
LAND. THEY’RE BOTH GREAT MACHINES,
BOTH HAVE THE T-MOTION SHOCKS,
THE 850 MOTOR, AND THE ADJUSTABLE SHOCKS, BOTH
COME WITH ELECTRIC START, AND
THESE NICE GRIPS WHICH ARE HEATED. NO NEED FOR A BAG BECAUSE THIS
ONE COMES WITH STORAGE RIGHT
HERE FOR GLOVES AND GOGGLES AND STUFF. MAINTENANCE ON THIS MACHINE IS
EASY BECAUSE IT’S SIMPLE AND
IT’S EASY ACCESS TO YOUR BELT AND EVERYTHING SO
THEY MADE IT NICE AND EASY. ONE OF THE GREAT THINGS ABOUT AD
TRIPLE S IS THAT THEY KNOW YOU
WANT TO STAND OUT AND BE DIFFERENT, AND
SO YOU CAN GET A CUSTOM WRAP JOB
JUST FOR YOU. WHATEVER COLOR YOU WANT OR
DESIGN SO YOU CAN BE UNIQUE AND
DIFFERENT OUT THERE ON THE MOUNTAIN. SO COME OUT TO AD TRIPLE S IN
WEST HAVEN. THIS IS MY HOME SHOP WHERE I
COME FOR ALL MY SNOWMOBILE
NEEDS. I’M JORDAN WAYMENT AND WE’LL BE
BACK WITH MORE AYL IN JUST A
MINUTE. (Music Up) RIA: CAREFUL THERE TIGER! CHAD: DID YOU THINK WE WERE
COMING TO GET YOU? RIA: WE ARE! YOU NEED TO COME OUT HERE! CHAD: WELCOME BACK TO AYL! NOW RIA, I WANT TO ASK YOU A
QUESTION. IN YOUR IMAGINATION,
WHERE ARE WE RIGHT NOW. RIA: OH, FOR ME WE’RE IN THE
SERENGETI, EVEN THOUGH I’VE
NEVER BEEN THERE, AND I JUST IMAGINE ELEPHANTS AND
WILDEBEEST BEING CHASED BY A
LION. CHAD: A SERENGETI LION. RIA: YEAH, IT’S JUST LIKE YOU
CHASING ME AROUND THE HOUSE. CHAD: IF SOMEONE WERE TO ASK ME
WHERE WE ARE RIA: OH! WHERE DO YOU THINK WE
ARE? CHAD: THANK YOU RIA. FOR ME WE’RE IN THE LAND OF THE
SUGAR PLUM FAIRY BECAUSE IT IS
CHRISTMAS TIME AND THE FROST ON THE SAND
IS JUST BEAUTIFUL AND REALLY
COOL. RIA: IT IS ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL
OUT HERE. I WANT TO MOVE HERE. CHAD: AND THE SAND WHEN IT’S
FROZEN FEELS DIFFERENT, IF THAT
MAKES SENSE. IT GIVES YOU A DIFFERENT KIND OF
TRACTION. RIA: YOU CAN DO SOME FUN SNOW
ANGELS OUT HERE TOO, EVEN THOUGH
IT’S IN THE SAND. CHAD: YOU’LL JUST HAVE TO WASH
YOUR CLOTHES AFTER. RIA: I’LL MAKE YOU DO THAT FOR
ME. CHAD: ANYWAY, WE’VE LISTED A FEW
REASONS WHY YOU NEED TO RIDE IN
THE WINTER, BUT THERE ARE PLENTY MORE. (Music up) RUSS STEADMAN: WE HAVE
ALL-TERRAIN VEHICLES BUT THEY
SHOULD BE CALLED ALL-SEASON VEHICLES TOO BECAUSE
PEOPLE THINK IT’S GETTING COLD
AND THEY NEED TO PUT THEIR MACHINES AWAY
FOR A FEW MONTHS, BUT REALLY
WHAT YOU’RE GETTING IS A CHANGE IN SCENERY. ANOTHER GOOD THING ABOUT RIDING
YOUR MACHINE IS THAT WHEN YOU
PUT YOU ATV OR SIDE-BY-SIDE OR DIRT BIKE
AWAY YOU HAVE TO DO A WHOLE
BUNCH OF MAINTENANCE ON IT, LIKE PUT A BATTERY
CHARGER ON IT AND PUT ADDITIVE
INTO THE ETHANOL FUEL THAT YOU’RE RUNNING. YOU HAVE TO DO ALL THESE THINGS
AND SO THERE’S A TON OF
MAINTENANCE YOU HAVE TO DO WHEN YOU PUT IT AWAY. IF YOU DON’T PUT IT AWAY YOU
DON’T HAVE TO DO ANYTHING. YOU JUST RIDE IT. IT KEEPS YOUR FLUIDS GOOD AND
YOUR ENGINE, SO THERE’S LESS
MAINTENANCE IF YOU RIDE IT AT LEAST ONCE A
MONTH. A COUPLE YEARS AGO WE WENT OUT
AS A FAMILY AND RODE IN THE SNOW
AND IT WAS LIKE YOU WERE IN A DIFFERENT
WORLD. YOU’RE ON THE SAME TRAIL BUT
EVERYTHING IS DIFFERENT AND YOU
SEE NEW THINGS. SNOW, ICE, FROST, ALL OF THOSE
THINGS. WEAR THE PROPER CLOTHING. KNOW THAT YOU’RE GOING TO BE OUT
IN COLDER CONDITIONS. YOU’LL BE FINE, I MEAN SIDE BY
SIDES HAVE WINDSHIELDS NOW. MOST OF THE COLD IS BECAUSE THAT
WIND IS HITTING YOU. YOU JUST NEED TO GET OUT OF THAT
MIND-SET THAT THINGS ARE COLD,
AND ALL OF THESE WORRIES GO AWAY. JUST THINK THERE IS A NEW AND
EXCITING THING TO DO AND GO OUT
IN THE WINTER! RIA: SO THERE’S NO REASON TO
CHARGE YOUR BATTERY AND
STABILIZE YOUR FUEL. JUST GET OUT AND RIDE ALL
WINTER, AND YOU CAN DO IT RIGHT
HERE. CHAD: THAT’S RIGHT, WE’RE BORN
TO RIDE. RIA: BORN TO RIDE. RIDE TO BE
BORN. ALL OF THAT GOOD STUFF! CHAD: WELL RIGHT NOW IT’S TIME
FOR US TO GO OFF TO OUR
TRAILHEAD ADVENTURE BROUGHT TO YOU BY ROCKY MOUNTAIN
ATV MC. EARLIER THIS MONTH
PRESIDENT DRUMPF DOWNSIZE BEARS EARS AND GRAND
STAIRCASE NATIONAL MONUMENTS AND
THERE HAVE BEEN A LOT OF MISINFORMATION AND
CONFUSION REGARDING THAT
DECISION AND WE WANTED TO TAKE A LOOK AT HOW IT WILL
AFFECT YOU AND THE PEOPLE LIVING
ON THEIR DOORSTEPS. REBECCA BENALLY: As a Native
American Denak woman standing
here it was very insulting that the bureaucrats
thousands of miles away didn’t
believe we were capable of protecting and
preserving our homeland we call
San Juan County. These are people who didn’t
understand, and couldn’t find us
on the map before this whole Bears Ears National
Monument. MALIA STRINGHAM: WHO OWNS THE
LAND? IT’S A QUESTION POSED BY
PHILOSOPHERS THROUGHOUT THE
AGES. IS IT OWNED BY AN INDIVIDUAL WHO
PAYS FOR A PARCEL? A GOVERNMENT WHO’S BORDERS
EXTEND OVER IT? DOES IT BELONG TO EVERYONE, OR
CAN IT TRULY BE OWNED AT ALL? ON DECEMBER 28TH 2016 PRESIDENT
BARAK OBAMA DESIGNATED THE BEARS
EARS NATIONAL MONUMENT UNDER THE AUTHORITY
GRANTED HIM BY THE ANTIQUITIES
ACT OF 1906. THE LAW WAS INTENDED TO ALLOW
PRESIDENTS TO SET ASIDE CERTAIN
SECTIONS OF LAND FOR PROTECTION, PRIMARILY
AREAS SURROUNDING NATIVE
AMERICAN ARTIFACTS AND RUINS. THE ACT STATES THAT
MONUMENTS ARE TO BE CONFINED TO
THE SMALLEST AREA COMPATIBLE WITH THE PROPER
CARE AND MANAGEMENT OF THE
OBJECTS TO BE PROTECTED. ORIGINALLY THERE WAS NO
CONTROVERSY REGARDING THE LAW,
UNTIL 1996 WHEN PRESIDENT BILL CLINTON DESIGNATED ALMOST 2
MILLION ACRES AS THE GRAND
STAIRCASE ESCALANTE NATIONAL MONUMENT IN SOUTHERN
UTAH. LOCAL LEADERS AND
RESIDENTS HAD BEEN COMPLETELY LEFT OUT OF THAT
DECISION, AND SINCE THEN THE
FIGHT OVER MONUMENT DESIGNATION HAS BEEN ONE OF
HEATED DEBATE AND CAUSTIC
RHETORIC. WHEN DESIGNATED, BEARS EARS WAS
ALMOST A MILLION AND A HALF
ACRES, BUT ON DECEMBER 4TH 2017 PRESIDENT
DRUMPF ISSUED A PROCLAMATION
STATING THE BOUNDARIES OF BOTH BEARS EARS
AND GRAND STAIRCASE SHOULD BE
REDUCED TO FIT MORE IN-LINE WITH THE
REQUIREMENTS OF THE ANTIQUITIES
ACT. IMMEDIATELY CRIES OF ‘PUBLIC LANDS STOLEN’
REVERBERATED ACROSS THE
INTERNET. FOR LOCAL COUNTY AND TRIBAL
LEADERS ON THE GROUND HOWEVER, THE DECISION MEANT THEIR VOICES
HAD BEEN HEARD FOR THE FIRST
TIME SINCE THE DESIGNATION. BRUCE ADAMS: We got a reduction
in the monument size, we think
that’s going to be significant. We need now
for congressional leaders to act
and get San Juan County and Utah exempt in
some way from the Antiquities
Act so we don’t play this ping-pong game with
presidents every four or eight
years. PHIL LYMAN: You know, the other
side is really unhappy about a
president coming in an unilaterally
reducing it. We were equally
unhappy about a president unilaterally coming in
and designating it. That could be resolved if
congress would act. You know, I
think myself that the Antiquities Act is
antiquated. We’re not having
anymore this massive western expansion and threat to
assets. MALIA STRINGHAM: FOR
RECREATIONISTS THE REDUCTION TO
BOTH MONUMENTS COULD MEAN EXPANDED ACCESS, AS 60
PERCENT OF THE ROADS WERE
REMOVED FROM MAPS WHEN THE GRAND STAIRCASE WAS
DESIGNATED. WHETHER THOSE ROUTES
WILL BE REOPENED IS STILL UP IN THE AIR,
BUT AS FOR BEARS EARS, TRAILS
THAT MAY HAVE BEEN CLOSED IN THE COMING YEARS
DUE TO THE DESIGNATION WILL
LIKELY REMAIN OPENED FOR TRADITIONAL USES. MUCH OF THE CONFUSION AND
CONTROVERSY FROM BOTH THE
DESIGNATION AND NOW REDUCTION OF THE MONUMENT STEMS
FROM THE PERCEPTION OF HOW AND
WHY NATIVE AMERICANS USE AND APPRECIATE
BEARS EARS. FOR LOCAL TRIBAL
LEADERS THOSE MISCONCEPTIONS CONTINUE TO
THREATEN THE LAND AND THEIR WAY
OF LIFE. REBECCA BENALLY: The Bears Ears
area is considered a sacred area
for Native Americans. The Paiute, the
Posies Tribe Utes, the Navajo.
Those are the true tribes of San Juan County. While
it may be a sacred site, we
don’t want thousands and thousands of
people as we give offerings as
Native American people. We go there to gather
herbs and medicinal plants for
medicine, to cut wood to heat our homes
and to cook food, and to graze
our animals there so that we would have a
prosperous year. They don’t
understand our culture and heritage and the
traditions that we have in San
Juan County. They romanticize what my elders
have believed for generations in
this country. We’re not for sale and we never
will be; our tradition and our
culture. (Applause) BRUCE ADAMS: The administration
was very intent in listening to
local voices when talking about the monument,
and couldn’t be more happy than
to hear those words from the
administration that they were
wanting to listen to the local voices. SUZY FELIMAN: We want all
Americans to enjoy Bears Ears
like it used to be. Nobody is told to get off the
land. Everybody is to be
welcome. MALIA STRINGHAM: THE CONTROVERSY
IS FAR FROM OVER AS
ENVIRONMENTAL GROUPS HAVE FILED SUIT IN FEDERAL COURT
TO STOP THE REDUCTION OF BOTH
MONUMENTS. DESPITE ALL THE ARGUMENTS AND
IDEOLOGIES THE QUESTION REMAINS:
WHO OWNS THE LAND? IN THIS CASE A SECOND COULD BE
ADDED TO IT: WHAT IS PROTECTION? FOR NATIVE TRIBES PROTECTION IS
RESPECT AND ACCESS TO THE LAND
FOR ALL PEOPLES; AN IDEA THE REST OF US
COULD LIKELY LEARN FROM. I’M MALIA STRINGHAM FOR AT YOUR
LEISURE. (Music Up) CHAD: RIA, YOU SHOULD HAVE
REMINDED ME TO GET GAS BEFORE WE
TOOK OFF. RIA: YOU ALWAYS HAVE GAS. CHAD: WELL NOW THE STEADMANS
HAVE TAKEN OFF AND WE’RE GOING
TO HAVE TO WALK BACK. WELCOME BACK TO AYL, WE’RE NOT
REALLY OUT OF GAS, WE’RE JUST
WALKING AROUND THE DUNES AND ENJOYING THE
WINTER BEAUTY. THERE’S A LOT TO LEARN ABOUT
DEAD AHEAD STARTING WITH OUR
CALENDAR OF EVENTS. JANUARY 18 THROUGH THE 20 IN
HURRICANE UTAH IS THE WINTER 4X4
JAMBOREE. RIA: THIS IS A GREAT EVENT IN
THE WARM WEATHER OF SOUTHERN
UTAH AND SO MUCH FUN! GET SOME SUNSHINE AND GET
OUT OF THAT YUCKY SALT LAKE AIR. THEY’RE ALL LAID BACK AND READY
TO RIDE. AND NOW WE’RE GOING TO TAKE A
LOOK AT OUR CHRISTMAS EPISODE! CHAD: HERE’S A PRESENT YOU CAN
OPEN EARLY. STEVEN HEUMANN: WE’RE RIDING TO
THE NORTH POLE NEXT WEEK AS CHAD
AND RIA CLIMB ABOARD ONE TRAIN THAT HAS
HOLIDAY SPIRIT TO SPARE. HOW CAN YOUR FAMILY ENJOY THIS
TRIP ALL THE WAY THROUGH THE NEW
YEAR? WE’LL SHOW YOU. THEN REECE STEIN LOOKS BACK TEN
YEARS TO HIS CHRISTMAS ADVENTURE
ON THE FROZEN CONTINENT OF ANTARTICA. IT’S A LOOK BACK YOU WON’T WANT
TO MISS ON THE AYL CHRISTMAS
SPECIAL NEXT WEEK. CHAD: WELL WE HAVE OUR CHRISTMAS
SHOW LINED UP. DAVE DO YOU HAVE YOUR CHRISTMAS
SHOPPING DONE BUDDY? DAVE: OF COURSE. JUST COME OUT
TO KNOLLS AND FORGET THE
SHOPPING! RIA: YOU CAN JUST GO TO THE
STORE AND PICK UP WHAT YOU WANT
ANYWAY. DAVID: I WASN’T GOING TO SAY
THAT, BUT RIA: THERE ARE SOME PERKS. DAVE: THERE ARE, YEAH. WE NEED TO GET SOME SNOW SO WE
CAN PLAY WITH THE SNOW VEHICLES. CHAD: REAL QUICK, IF SOMEONE IS
IN NEED OF A LAST MINUTE
CHRISTMAS GIFT DO YOU GUYS HAVE ANYTHING? DAVE: WE HAVE EVERYTHING. WE HAVE STUFF FROM $50 TO $100
ALL THE WAY UP TO $20 THOUSAND. SO GET THE FAMILY TOGETHER AND
GET DAD A PRESENT! CHAD: I WANT TO KNOW WHAT THAT
$20 THOUSAND STOCKING STUFFER
LOOKS LIKE. DAVE: WE’VE GOT GLOVES, GOGGLES,
HELMETS. YOU NAME IT. CHAD: THANKS FOR TAKING US
RIDING TODAY. WHAT A GREAT SECRET I’M GLAD YOU
WERE WILLING TO SHARE TODAY. DAVE: MY PLEASURE. WHAT A GREAT TIME. THERE’S NOBODY HERE. IT’S LIKE WE’RE ON MARS OR
SOMETHING. RIA: IT’S YOUR HOME PLANET BABE! CHAD: HEY LOOK, THERE’S MATT
DAMON OVER THERE! RIA: WE HAVE TOO MUCH FUN! CHAD: ANYWAY REMEMBER THERE’S
ADVENTURE AROUND EVERY CORNER. RIA: JUST GET OUT AND CREATE
YOUR OWN ADVENTURE. ALL: AT YOUR LEISURE!
